X-Plane has about 100 land-uses for the whole planet. (Desert, forest, farm, etc.)
X-Plane applies terrain textures to those land-use types.
Just open the "landuse.txt" to see what textures are used by what land-use types.

Now, edit the land-texture bitmaps in this folder all you like.
Even add more terrain bitmaps to the terrain folder get more variation in terrain textures,
which you will access by changing (NOT ADDING!) entried in the land_use.txt file.

Or take some away to save RAM on your 3-D card!
Just make sure you edit the "landuse.txt" file to correctly use the land-use texture bitmaps.

Note: Be sure all your filenames end in "0_0_00_0.bmp"!
Do this or X-Plane will not read them in!

For customizing your own autogen scenery in certain areas, look at the folders city -90+90 -180+180
and city +34+35 -118-117 in the terrain folder. These give the latitude and longitude ranges of these
autogen bitmaps and text files. The -90+90 -180+180 covers the entire world, and the +34+35 -118-117
covers the SoCal area... you can make all the custom autogen folders you like, with the lat and lon ranges
you like. In places where folders overlap, X-PLANE WILL ALWAYS USE WHICHEVER FOLDER HAS THE LAT-LON RANGE
THAT IS SMALLEST. This allows you to design scenery with increasing levels of detail as you get to more and
more tightly-defined regions.
